Orientating your map with a compass.
One of the basic ways to use map and compass together is orientating the map with the help of your compass.
Look at the compass and its red needle. Now align the map in the same direction as the compass needle is pointing. Since north is "up" on a map and the compass needle points north, the map is now orientated to match your surrounding terrain.
Once your map is orientated correctly you can easily identify and point out terrain features from the map. Features to the left of your position will appear to the left of your position on the map and so on.
