After climbing east out of Ambleside this route drops down to cross Troutbeck before launching a full scale assault on the fells over to Kentmere. The return leg uses the Garburn Pass which is the old road connecting Troutbeck with Kentmere. The Garburn Pass is a rough track which is now a popular route for both mountain bikers and ramblers. It's by no means the steepest or the highest of the lakeland passes but it's generally acknowledged as one of the toughest.
